4. Chemical safety & fertilizer spillages

How to handle water-soluble fertilizers and concentrates safely around the Elemental skid — PPE, filling discipline, and what to do if product spills.

DANGER — Corrosive and reactive concentrates Fertilizer solutions and dry concentrates can burn skin and eyes, release hazardous fumes if mixed incorrectly, and harm waterways if washed away. Treat every tote and tank as a chemical hazard until the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for that product says otherwise.
Golden rule The SDS for each fertilizer on site is the authority for first aid, PPE, spill clean-up, and disposal. This chapter is the site operating summary — it does not replace the SDS or your employer’s chemical procedures.

Before you handle any fertilizer

  1. Complete site chemical induction and know the location of the SDS binder / digital SDS.
  2. Know where the eye-wash, safety shower (if fitted), spill kit, and emergency contact list are.
  3. Confirm you have the correct product for the labelled tote / BIG or SML channel — never guess from colour alone.
  4. Put on the PPE required by the SDS and site rules before opening a container.

Minimum PPE (typical — confirm on SDS)

ItemWhen
Chemical-resistant glovesFilling, sampling, wiping residues, spill clean-up
Safety glasses or gogglesWhenever liquid or dust can splash or blow
Face shieldPouring from height, pressure wash-down, large transfers
Chemical apron / coverallBulk filling of totes or tanks
Closed shoes (chemical resistant if required)Always in the fertigation area
Dust mask / respiratorOnly if SDS / site risk assessment requires it for dry product

Safe filling and housekeeping

  • Keep tote lids and tank ports closed when not filling.
  • Use dedicated clean transfer equipment — do not share scoops or hoses between incompatible products.
  • Fill slowly; leave headspace; wipe drips immediately with absorbent, not a water hose to drain.
  • Label every container clearly. Do not leave open bags or unlabelled jugs on the skid.
  • Keep food, drink, and personal items out of the chemical area.
  • Wash hands after glove removal and before leaving the area.
WARNING — Never improvise mixes Do not pour two concentrates together in a bucket “to save time.” Incompatible fertilizers can precipitate, heat, or release gas. Elemental doses through designed channels — respect that separation on the skid as well.

Fertilizer spillages — immediate actions

Small spill (contained on skid / hardstand, no injury)

  1. Stop the source — upright the container, close the valve, stop filling.
  2. Alert nearby workers; keep unnecessary people out of the area.
  3. Protect yourself — gloves and eye protection on before clean-up.
  4. Contain — surround liquid with absorbent socks / booms from the spill kit. For dry product, mist lightly only if SDS allows, or cover to limit dust — do not create runoff.
  5. Absorb — apply inert absorbent (as listed in SDS / site kit). Work from the outside of the spill toward the centre.
  6. Collect — shovel into a labelled chemical waste container. Do not put fertilizer waste into general rubbish or storm drains.
  7. Decontaminate — wipe residual with damp absorbent per SDS; rinse tools into the waste stream, not the yard drain.
  8. Restock the spill kit and report the incident per site procedure.

Large spill, drain risk, fumes, or anyone injured

  1. Raise the alarm — call your site emergency number.
  2. If safe, stop pumps / close valves and turn the cabinet power switch (#5) OFF only if that helps stop product movement and does not delay escape.
  3. Evacuate upwind if fumes or unknown reaction. Account for people.
  4. Use emergency cut-off (#6) if the machine is running and product is still being dosed.
  5. Treat injured persons using SDS first-aid section — for eyes: rinse at eye-wash for the time stated on the SDS while help is called.
  6. Do not wash a large spill into soil, drains, or waterways. Contain and wait for trained responders if the spill exceeds what your kit and training cover.
WARNING — Environmental harm Nutrient-rich runoff pollutes waterways and may be illegal. Never hose fertilizer spills “away” into gutters, soakaways, or irrigation returns unless your environmental permit and SDS explicitly allow a controlled recovery method.

Personal contamination — first response

ExposureImmediate action (then follow SDS)
Skin contact Remove contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with plenty of water. Seek medical advice if burning, rash, or SDS requires it.
Eye contact Hold eyelids open; rinse at eye-wash continuously for the SDS-specified time. Get medical help.
Inhalation of dust/fumes Move to fresh air. Seek medical help if breathing is difficult.
Swallowing Do not induce vomiting unless SDS says so. Rinse mouth. Call emergency medical services with the product name and SDS.

Spill kit — keep it ready

Check weekly that the kit is sealed, stocked, and dry. Typical contents:

  • Chemical-resistant gloves and goggles (spares)
  • Absorbent pads / socks / pillows rated for chemical use
  • Inert absorbent granules
  • Dustpan, brush, and labelled waste bags / pail
  • Neutraliser only if specified by SDS for products you stock (never invent a neutraliser)
  • Copy of site emergency contacts and SDS index

After any spill

  1. Record what spilled, how much, where, and who responded.
  2. Replace used PPE and spill-kit stock before the next shift.
  3. Inspect totes, valves, and hoses for the leak cause before restarting a blend.
  4. If product entered a concentrate channel, confirm the Setup tile and logs before pressing START.
Next When the chemical area is secure, review Basic maintenance (hose direction, leak checks, dry cleaning), then power the machine in Getting started.
